Blockage in the urinary tract

A blockage in the urinary tract occurs when something obstructs the normal flow of urine, preventing it from being excreted from the body. The blockage can occur in any part of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. The most common causes of a urinary tract blockage include kidney stones, tumors, or an enlarged prostate gland. Symptoms can include pain in the side or lower back, frequent urination, and difficulty passing urine. In severe cases, a blockage can lead to kidney damage or infection.
Treatment options for a urinary tract blockage depend on the cause of the blockage. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to help dissolve kidney stones or reduce the size of an enlarged prostate gland. Surgery may be necessary to remove a tumor or to repair a blockage in the urinary tract. If the blockage cannot be treated, a catheter may be used to drain urine from the bladder. Doral Health and Wellness’s Nephrology Department can provide consultation and treatment options to help alleviate symptoms and cure the underlying condition causing the blockage.
